Northeastern Liaoning Province has been known historically as an industrial base of China however the agricultural production in Liaoning also ranks it as one of China¡¯s primary agricultural areas. Liaoning had one of its largest harvests ever recorded in 1999 when more than 16 million tons of grain were harvested.
In recent years, the provincial agricultural bureau and foreign trade and economic bureau have earmarked US$550 million to construct agricultural infrastructure facilities and service projects, develop quality rice, vegetables, fruits and flowers and implement improved processing of produce.
There is currently a plan to import 1,000 varieties of crops from foreign countries and hire150 foreign agricultural technicians annually during the period from 2001 to 2005. The province projects earnings of US$2 billion in foreign exchange from exports of farm produce and sideline products in that five years time.
Agriculture is one aspect of Liaoning¡¯s development that has very tangible and visible results. The amount and variety of fresh fruits and vegetables available year-round is impressive compared with the formerly standard fare of Chinese cabbage, potatoes and carrots in the winter season prior to 1995. The ubiquitous greenhouses in Liaoning¡¯s countryside have provided farmers with a way to utilize their time and land during the cold winter months as well as meet a growing demand for variety in the market. Additionally, there is an ever-expanding market of organic foods, including fruits, vegetables, poultry and other agricultural products. Liaoning is committed to providing a thriving domestic and international market with the best agricultural products possible.
