When you visit Sapori ¨C Ristorante Italiano on the second floor of the Gloria Plaza Hotel, you will be instantly transported to Venice, Italy while never leaving Shenyang. Opened two months ago by Mr. Carlo Oliverio from Italy, this new traditional Italian restaurant is a place you won¡¯t want to miss.
The atmosphere is very comfortable, with soft lights, soft colors, a fireplace, fresh flowers on the tables, and scenes from Venice, Italy, including traditional Carnival masks on each table. They even have a division for smoking and non-smoking sections. The menu includes everything from Italian pizza to a wide range of appetizers and main courses to desserts
Just like in Italy, Carlo suggested that we start off our meal with a glass of Martini White to ¡°get our digestive juices flowing before our meal¡± and a basket of freshly baked bread and breadsticks made in the northern Italian tradition served with garlic butter like you¡¯ve never tasted before.
For an appetizer, we selected the baked eggplant parmesean, which was a perfect combination of layers of tomato sauce, cheese, and eggplant. Other antipasta choices include deep fried mozzarella with marinara sauce, Italian cold cuts and cheese, pan fried goose liver, and sliced beef tenderloin. They also have a nice selection of soups and salads.
As our main course, we started out with an Italian pizza, which has a very thin, crispy crust, light sauce, and a good selection of toppings. As other main courses, they have home-made pasta, Italian rice, gnocchi, steaks, lamb chops, chicken, pork, fish including sea bass, grilled salmon, and grilled prawns. In the Italian tradition, we let our food settle between courses and asked for each dish to come separately. If you want of course, you can order everything to come at once. Our next dish was homemade ravioli stuffed with ricotta cheese and spinach with a tomato cream sauce, which was excellent. Everything is made on the premises and Carlo personally prepares your food, so you are able to dine in Shenyang and taste the culinary arts of a true Italian chef. As our last main dish, we tried the grilled salmon, which was served with a mustard and pine nut sauce and a mixture of fresh vegetables including red and yellow bell peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, and asparagus. The white wine Carlo recommended perfectly complemented the flavor of the salmon.
To finish off our incredible meal, Carlo brought us his fresh homemade Tiramisu¡ªlight layers of cake, chilled cream, coffee, and chocolate sauce. It was a dessert lovers delight and the only word I can think of to describe it is ¡°Heavenly!¡±
With such good prices, great food, and great customer service, I highly recommend you try Sapori in the Gloria Plaza Hotel. It is located on the second floor, but make sure that when you get off the elevator, you turn to the right because to your left is another restaurant that serves a buffet, not to be confused with the new Italian restaurant. They even have a lunch set including choice of entr¨¦e and one soft drink for only 58 Yuan so there is something there for everyone.
It wouldn¡¯t be fair to do a restaurant review without looking for the good and bad sides of the establishment, but the only negative thing I can say about this restaurant is that it didn¡¯t open sooner! Thank you to Mr. Carlo Oliverio for bringing us a touch of Venice to our home here in China. Welcome to Shenyang!
